Shor vs. Wise (2026): Transfer Price vs. Total Cost

Shor vs Wise in 2026. Wise wins on per-transfer price; we compare the total cost of running contractors, with sources and honest math.

TL;DR: On per-transfer price, Wise is cheaper, and if you're willing to run the whole contractor process yourself, it will always be the cheapest option. Its published fees start at 0.23% at the mid-market rate, which is genuinely excellent. The comparison that matters is who does everything around the payment: contracts, W-8BEN collection, invoices, conversion decisions, records. On Wise, that's a human on your team, every month. On Shor it's $19/month per contractor and it all runs on autopilot with minimal intervention from your team.

We build Shor, so read this page knowing that. Every Wise figure below comes from Wise's own published pricing pages, linked and current as of August 2026.

Two different products

Wise Business moves money. A multi-currency account with transfers priced at the mid-market exchange rate plus a published fee, from 0.23% by currency, with a $31 one-time setup fee for the full account and volume discounts once you spend past $25,000. It is one of the best-priced ways to move a dollar across a border, its fees are famously transparent, and nothing in this post disputes either point.

Shor runs the contractor operation, with money movement inside it. Onboarding, a localized contract that fits the contractor's country, W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E collected before the first payment, invoices collected and matched to payments, scheduled payouts on instant local rails where we support them, a flat disclosed 2% FX margin applied only when money actually converts, and records your bookkeeper can pull without asking you anything. That's $19/month per contractor.

Wise doesn't claim to do the second job. It's a payments company, and a good one. The question this page answers is what the second job costs you when nobody does it for you.

The work Wise leaves on your desk

Paying a contractor through Wise means someone at your company, usually a founder early on, does the following every month: chase the invoice, check it against the agreement, enter or upload the batch, decide whether to send USD or convert, hit send, download the receipt, and file everything somewhere a bookkeeper or a diligence associate can find it later. Before any of that, someone drafted a contractor agreement for that country and collected a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E so your US tax position is documented.

None of this is Wise's fault. It solves money movement and solves it well. But the work doesn't disappear because the transfer was cheap; it moves to your payroll, and your payroll is a person.

At one to three contractors this is annoying but survivable. Call it an hour or two a month and a nagging worry about whether the paperwork folder is actually complete. At ten contractors it's a recurring chunk of someone's week. At the scale where this comparison gets real, a team running 30 to 100 offshore contractors (sales reps, support agents, content moderators, data annotators), you are hiring an ops person, and eventually two, whose job is substantially "run the contractor process".

The math

Our estimate, and it is an estimate: running one contractor by hand takes roughly an hour a month once you count invoice collection, approval, batch entry, conversion decisions, and filing the records. Price that time at $50/hour, a modest loaded cost for a US ops hire. Your process may be leaner or messier; rerun the table with your own numbers.

ContractorsDIY admin hours/month (our estimate)DIY admin cost at $50/hourShor platform fee
3~3~$150$57/month
10~10~$500$190/month
30~30~$1,500$570/month
100~100, most of a full-time ops hire~$5,000$1,900/month

Read it honestly, both directions. On the conversion itself, Wise's published pricing beats our flat 2%, and if every dollar you send converts to local currency, that gap is real money in Wise's favor. Two things narrow it: on Shor, contractors invoice in USD and many hold part of their balance in dollars, so the 2% applies only to what actually converts, and often that's a fraction of the payment. And the admin column doesn't shrink as you grow; it compounds, which is exactly when the $19 meter looks smallest next to it.

With Shor the monthly run is a short review-and-approve pass, a couple of minutes for most teams, and the rest happens without you. That's the product: not cheaper transfers than Wise, but a contractor operation that doesn't consume a human.

The compliance question a transfer tool can't answer

Wise verifies that money gets where you sent it. It doesn't, and can't, check whether your contractor relationship is set up correctly: whether there's a real agreement with IP assignment that fits the contractor's country, whether the W-8BEN was collected before the first payment, whether the working relationship actually looks like contracting. That isn't a criticism of Wise; a regulated payments company solves a different problem.

Shor gives you localized contracts and tax-form collection as part of onboarding, so the paperwork exists before money moves. Be careful with anyone who promises more than that: no platform makes misclassification risk disappear, because the risk lives in how you actually work with the person. If a contractor is functionally an employee, fix the classification and confirm it with counsel. We wrote more on what each payment method leaves you holding in how to pay international contractors.

Switching from Wise

If you're already running contractors through Wise, the switching cost is lower than it looks, because we do the migration of your current process for you. On a single call we take your contractor list, existing agreements, and any tax forms you've collected, then we re-paper what needs re-papering, collect what's missing, and set up the payment schedule. Your contractors get an onboarding link; you get the same people paid on the same dates, with the paperwork complete this time. Most teams run their first Shor payroll within the week.

When Wise is the right answer

Genuinely, often:

  • One-off international payments and reimbursements. A platform fee makes no sense for a payment that happens once.
  • A small, stable contractor count with a process someone enjoys running. If you have two contractors, the paperwork is truly handled, and the monthly ritual takes ten minutes, Wise's pricing is unbeatable. Keep it.
  • Holding and spending multi-currency balances. That's Wise's home turf, not ours.
  • Pure transfer cost as the only criterion. Wise wins that comparison, and we said so in Wise vs. Deel vs. Shor too.

The switch makes sense when the contractor count is growing and the process is becoming someone's job. Run your own numbers against the pricing calculator.

FAQ

Is Wise cheaper than Shor? On per-transfer sticker price, yes. Wise publishes fees from 0.23% at the mid-market rate, and if you're willing to run contracts, tax forms, invoicing, and records yourself, Wise will always be the cheapest option. Shor's $19/month per contractor buys the operation around the payment, which on Wise is unpriced work done by your team.

Can Wise collect W-8BEN forms? No. Wise Business is a money movement and multi-currency account product; it doesn't collect W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E forms, produce contractor agreements, or handle invoicing. If you pay through Wise, those stay your responsibility. Shor collects the correct form during onboarding, before the first payment.

How hard is it to switch from Wise to Shor? One call. We take over your existing contractor list, agreements, and tax forms, fill the gaps, and schedule payments so nobody misses a payday. You don't rebuild your process; we absorb it.

Do I need a contractor platform or is a transfer tool enough? Count two things: contractors and months. One contractor, occasional payments, paperwork genuinely handled elsewhere: a transfer tool is enough, and Wise is a great one. The same people every month, with the count growing: the admin and compliance work becomes the real cost, and a platform that includes it is usually cheaper than the person you'd otherwise assign to it.
